Our Sport Performance team consists of Sport Psychologists and clinicians who are licensed in multiple states.

Paul Groenewal, PsyD

Dr. Paul Groenewal is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Sport Psychologist. He completed a Masters and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary. His clients include teams wanting to increase cohesion and creating an environment that promotes high performance. Dr. Groenewal assists individual performers in understanding their personal psychology and developing strategies that lead to elite performances. He is the Sport Psychologist for the Brooklyn Nets, where his job is to educate on, develop and implement high performance strategies for elite athletes. He also works with the Nets Gaming Crew and serves as a clinical consultant to the NY Jets. In the past, he worked with the NY Liberty by providing strategies to optimize player performance.  Dr. Groenewal is the co-owner of a group psychology practice called Inspire Wellness. His group includes more than 25 clinicians and 3 locations in northern New Jersey. He has worked with athletes at many levels and in various sports.

Robert Sidell, PsyD

Dr. Bobby Sidell is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and ICF Certified Coach. He completed a Masters and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Wheaton College Graduate School. Over the past 24 years, he served much of his career in the United States Army Special Operations. He deployed to some of the most austere environments, supporting Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Marine Raiders, and Tier I Special Mission Units on unclassified and classified missions. He also served as the lead psychologist for several missions, helping Americans return home in a healthy manner and regain optimal functionality after years of captivity in countries such as Afghanistan, North Korea, and Russia. He has also consulted members of professional sports leagues regarding the evaluation processes of athletes and personnel and the critical role well-being plays in performance. Dr. Sidell owns Spiritus Invictus Consulting Firm, helping elite performers and senior leaders in sports and corporate industries achieve peak performance and live more fulfilling lives.

Lindsey Scarmozzino, LAC, NCC

Lindsey is a Licensed Associate Counselor and National Certified Counselor. She received her Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ. Lindsey specializes in working with individuals and teams at the high school, collegiate and professional levels by providing mental skills to aid clients in reaching their optimal performance.  In addition to mental performance, Lindsey treats clients with psychological disorders across the spectrum including but not limited to anxiety, depression, personality, and adjustment. In her work, Lindsey develops individualized treatment plans dependent on the specific needs of her clients. In addition to her work with us here at Inspire Wellness, Lindsey has over 5 years of experience coaching soccer at the collegiate and academy levels where she is currently an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University and over 6 years of experience in the fitness industry.

Nic Short, LAC

Nic is a Licensed Associate Counselor with a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Athletic Counseling from Springfield College and Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Psychology from West Virginia University. Prior to working at Inspire Wellness, Nic played soccer at West Virginia University and was the Assistant Coach for the men’s soccer team at Springfield College.

 

Nic specializes in mental performance which aims to help individuals achieve optimal performance. Nic works with individuals and groups in high school, collegiate, and professional sport levels and musicians/artists who face unique stressors from their high-performance environments. In addition to mental performance, Nic is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) which can benefit an individual who has been negatively impacted due to trauma. Nic works with clients to decrease the psychological symptoms that can be experienced due to psychological disorders like anxiety, depression, PTSD, adjustment, and many other challenges individuals may face.

 

Nic is passionate about fostering a supportive and collaborative counseling experience centered around the individuals’ unique needs and strengths.

Cyre Virgo, LAC

Cyre is a Licensed Associate Counselor with a passion for helping individuals achieve peak performance both mentally and physically. She received her Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Texas at Dallas. She also received her Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Psychology and Motor Exercise from Texas Tech University and a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree in Psychology with a minor in Kinesiology from Texas Tech University. Cyre specializes in working with individuals and teams in high school, college, and professional settings by offering mental techniques to help them achieve their goals. In addition to mental performance, Cyre also treats clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, self-esteem/ confidence, life transitions, and stress management. Prior to her career in counseling, Cyre was a student-athlete at Texas Tech University, where she competed in Division 1 track and field as a high jumper. Drawing from her athletic background and experience, she intimately understands the pressures and challenges faced by individuals striving for excellence in sports. As a member of the sports performance staff, Cyre is dedicated to providing personalized support and empowering her clients to overcome mental barriers to unlock their full potential.

Jacquelyn "Jacqui" Gnassi, MS

Jacqui is a Mental Performance Consultant pursuing her second Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from New Jersey City University. She received her Master of Science in Sport Psychology from Florida State University and Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. Jacqui specializes in working with individuals and teams at the high school, collegiate and professional levels by providing mental skills to aid clients in reaching their optimal performance. Her previous experiences both on the coaching side and the student-athlete side provide her with a unique perspective to mental performance. Jacqui meets clients where they are at in their unique situations, and helps equip them with tools to be successful now and in the future. In addition to her work with us here at Inspire Wellness, Jacqui has over 3 years of experience coaching soccer at the collegiate and academy levels.

BJ Durham, PhD candidate

BJ is a National Certified Counselor pursuing his Ph.D. in Counseling and Counselor Education at North Carolina State University. He received a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Waynesburg University, where he also completed his Bachelor’s degree majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. BJ previously worked as a mental health counselor and substance use counselor at Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services in Washington, PA. Currently, he specializes in working with youth, collegiate, and young adult clients, providing them with techniques and approaches to enhance all aspects of life and live holistically well. He also focuses on identity salience amongst athletes and utilizing mindfulness techniques to improve athletic performance. BJ is also a former collegiate basketball player from Waynesburg University.

Jeffrey A. Barrett, M.D., CASAC-T

Dr. Barrett is part of the Brooklyn Nets consulting team. He is a graduate of Columbia College, Dartmouth Medical School, and Harvard’s Health Professions Program, specializes in behavioral health, addiction, and total wellness coaching. He has experience working with professional athletes providing supportive and mental health coaching. Dr. Barrett was born in Jamaica and is interested in how culture and ethnicity shape decision, leadership development, and organizational performance. He enjoys connecting with his clients and describes himself as a compassionate listening for healing and transformation. Dr. Barrett is exquisitely sensitive to issues of racial equality, diversity, inclusion, and tolerance in the workplace.
